Position Purpose

  • Responsible for the strategy, development and implementation of an Open Innovation program across the Brambles global business.  This includes defining the strategy, alignment of key resources, active leadership, engagement with executive leadership teams, and the implementation of various internal/external tools to ensure a successful external innovation program.


  • Develops key cross industry collaborative opportunities to quickly identify, pilot, and validate key challenge solutions in an Open Innovation process engaging with both internal and external resources.


  • Define strategy, lead and implement an active “horizon” scanning process for emerging technologies, materials, digital innovations, and disruptive business model innovations across other industries.

Major/Key Accountabilities

Open Innovation:

  • Develop strategy and execute an Open Innovation program that integrates both external cooperation and innovation partners along with an employee engagement plan addressing industry challenges/opportunities across the supply chain.

  • Champions open innovation within the organization and outside; Leads the Open Innovation initiative and develops both prospecting & outreach campaigns through enabling our employees and external network.

  • Develop a digital strategy and related tools to ensure successful engagement with both internal and external collaborators.  This includes creating and managing tools for sharing and discussion of innovation areas and topics for feedback, solicitation, input.

  • Coordinates and manages inbound innovation leads; facilitates the transfer of successful OI initiatives into challenges pipeline


  • Ensure early identification of innovation, trends and disruptors for Brambles.  Build and execute a strategic horizon scanning process allowing for innovation enablement scouting.

  • Develop and curate a technology trend report focused on broad global trends, and transition these trends to regional innovation teams.

  • Identify and share market trends and inspirational findings relating to innovative supply chains, helping regional teams with the focus on increasing ability to innovate in each of our markets

Metrics / Communications:

  • Define key Open Innovation metrics and corresponding milestones for each specific challenge initiative. Drive lean (speed), and agile performance metrics for these defined challenges.

  • Represent Brambles at annual conferences related to Open Innovation through thought leadership speaking opportunities to drive further collaboration opportunities.

  • Develop and maintain a network of technologies thought leaders and facilitate discussions of Brambles staff with this network.

Innovation core team:

  • As a senior Innovation leader, participate in the development of Innovation strategy and execution of key initiatives.

  • Coordination across business units and functional leadership including CHEP, IFCO, BXBD, Product/Process Development to facilitate the identification and initiation of an Open Innovation portfolio of collaboration opportunities.



  • Development of an Open Innovation program with related key processes and metrics implemented across the Innovation function

  • Active Open Innovation challenges defined, executing, learning, and piloting.

  • Feedback from key stakeholder meetings – Innovation team, ELT


Authority/ Decision Making

  • Part of the Innovation core team – therefore defining the direction and structure of the Global Innovation function

  • Purchasing, hiring and firing commensurate with level in the organization

  • Decisions and recommendations associated with Open Innovation, functional metrics, reporting, processes and standards

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Business, Marketing/Innovation, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics or related fields.



  • 10+ years’ work experience in leading the development and execution of an Open Innovation portfolio management strategy, and related processes.

  • Advanced knowledge of product, process, and business model innovation and development processes.

  • Strong creative and analytical, problem solving, and project management skills

  • Multi-lingual skills desirable.


Skills and Knowledge

  • Strategic and entrepreneurial thinking and acting, as well as a strong customer orientation. High level of resilience and passion for new technologies as well as start-ups and young companies.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are critical, as this position interacts globally with internal teams in addition to potential cooperation partners, universities and start-ups.

  • Must be able to influence senior Business stakeholders around open/external innovation concepts and related processes.

  • Experience in multi-facility, international organizations.

  • Experience in diverse multi-cultural, corporate culture. 

  • Must possess drive for excellence and a get-it-done attitude.

  • Experience with Change Management and cultural change.
