Position Purpose

The Plant Operations Manager in Training is responsible for supporting total plant operations, developing and managing all local commercial activity within the market as well as managing the national relationships. Participate in transportation systems, program, project and policy planning and project development, both service and facility, by collecting and analyzing transportation statistics and information; developing methods of analysis; preparing and/or analyzing and evaluating existing and proposed plans, programs, projects for their ability to meet transportation objectives, and preparing reports of findings and delivering superior customer satisfaction by assisting and collaborating with the Plant Manager to drive results and exceed expectations in the key areas of safety, service, quality and cost. 


Major/Key Accountabilities


  • Drive Safety improvements (Zero Harm) across the Plant
  • Provide leadership to Plant staff to effectively recruit, train, develop, evaluate, motivate, delegate and monitor their activities
  • Directs the work of all facility employees – establishes production and shipping schedules based on availability of raw and finished goods.
  • Assists Plant Manager  as needed with employment decisions that will affect the facility
  • Continually reviews operations activities, including local transportation activities  to maintain compliance with all Federal, State and local laws (OSHA, DOL, DOJ, EPA, FD)
  • Direct Plant administration to ensure compliance to established policies


  • In collaboration with the Plant Manager, develops a balanced approach to maximize best operational practices and cost efficiencies across the Plant while maintaining critical quality and raw material utilization standards that are necessary to maintain customer satisfaction and Plant profitability
  • Build and manage an effective pipeline to maximize market penetration
  • Pricing and profitability strategy for the local market
  • Manage customer expectations and satisfaction
  • Secure and manage raw materials (inventory management)
  • Drive efficiencies in asset utilization through proper transportation scheduling, dispatch, & driver management while meeting customer expectations
  • Develop, format and publish weekly and monthly Key Performance Indicators related to freight and freight related services and measures.
  • Negotiate freight claims for goods damaged in transit
  • Work with customer service, pooling, warehousing operations, sales, and service centers to resolve issues and solve problems regarding transportation.
  • Maintain daily/monthly reporting
  • Manage transportation network design
  • Manage and audit carrier invoices for accuracy and contract compliance
  • Summarize and analyze key operational metrics on a daily/weekly basis
  • Identify areas of opportunity to cut cost without jeopardizing service
  • Create transportation performance report cards for business review meetings to discuss past transportation performance and future expectations
  • Compile and analyze historical shipping information to monitor trends and help develop bid packages
  • Resolve service failures and help implement process for continual improvement
  • Complete the daily routing process to accomplish the highest transportation service level at the lowest possible cost through correct carrier selection.
  • Monitor the execution of carrier pick-ups and deliveries throughout the network and insure that performance indicators are being met


  • Ensure the consistent execution of all SOPs throughout the Plant and in accordance with the PMS Commercial Organization, Global Supply Chain
  • Collects and maintains data to assist the Plant Manager in determining the cost and yield performance of the Plant in partnership with the overall P&L of the Plant
  • Drive cost control initiatives and process control within the Plant
  • Implementing the output of the plant network optimization, cell management
  • Drive compliance through teamwork for all Standard Operating Procedures within the Plant
  • Identify and execute Lean opportunities to effectively eliminate waste
