Position Purpose

Drives large, complex material based product development or improvement programs by leading cross functional projects utilizing CHEP resources, suppliers, and external engineering firms.

Will be the global expert in the use of plastic and other materials for the entire CHEP business.

Key driver of innovation to support growth in areas identified by marketing and the commercial teams


Major/Key Accountabilities

  • Leads product design, analysis, and testing for plastics as well as other materials.

  • Directs consultants and supplier engineering teams, as required to drive programs to completion.

  • Interacts with patent council to assure IP protection of new innovations.

  • Acts as key point of contact for requests by country management teams, business leaders, and procurement in the evaluation of alternative materials/materials grades to improve durability and/or reduce total product life cost. Provides material support for continuous improvement programs.

  • Stays on cutting edge of material and process technology.  Must function as industry expert in applicable fields. Must be a source of innovative thought for the company.

  • Along with commercial and quality teams, interact with customers to derive requirements, resolve incidents, and launch improvements.

  • Use networking capability to engage best sources globally to accomplish engineering tasks. 

  • Uses design for six sigma tools to drive successful product development.

  • Coach/supervise junior engineers and technicians and approves work.

  • Use business knowledge and technology to propose highly value added technical solutions for the business challenges at CHEP (reduce cost, improve service, and increase innovations).

  • Solves operations and business problems involving complex integration of technology and business issues.

  • Guides internal groups and suppliers to provide solutions that significantly enhance the performance of products and equipment.

  • Support Procurement in the evaluation of vendors supplying plastic materials and molding services as well as other materials.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering, Material Science or related field required. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Team player with the ability to work across boundaries.

  • Program Manager Certification a plus

  • Participation in industry organizations

  • Green belt certification desirable



  • 15+ years solid experience in product development, technical project management and new product production launch in marketing driven companies.

  • Demonstrated increased levels of responsibilities.

  • Prior experience managing global teams.

  • Proven matrix management skills to lead cross-functional teams

  • Hands-on product development experience with a variety of materials with a heavy emphasis on plastics.

  • Good working knowledge of computer-aided engineering tools and how to effectively utilize with different materials.

  • Solid working knowledge of material engineering properties including plastic, composites, and wood.

  • Solid working knowledge of material dependent manufacturing technologies. 

  • Use and certification of complex supply chains

  • Experience with production and design engineering management in multiple countries.

  • Solid cost estimating, spending management and project financial analysis experience.

  • Experience in multiple customer areas and a variety of technologies.
